Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State. It has a population of about 200,000, making it the fourth largest city in Myanmar and is at an elevation of (1400 m above sea level. Taunggyi name means "big mountain" in the Burmese language. It is the land of the Shan and other national races, namely Pa-O, Kachin, Padaung, Danu, Wa, Lahu, Kaw, Maingtha, Padaung, Taungya, Yin, Gon, Kayah, Lishau and Inntha its unique cultures.
A cool climate makes it a popular holiday destination. Its range of temperatures around 60°F in the cold months of December and January, 70 or 80, even in the hottest months of April, May, June and July.
Taunggyi area is a popular tourist destination. The city itself has an interesting market for five days, where farmers around the area could reach Taunggyi in the market day and selling fresh produce on the open market, but more development of the city, the importance of the market day has declined. However, the market continues the tradition days strong in the outlying towns.
