Pathein (Bassein) is the capital of Ayeyarwaddy Division. This port can be reached by road or by boat through the complex region of the Ayeyarwady River delta. The landscapes are filled with crops like sesame, groundnut, jute, maize, pulses, tobacco, and chilies. Parasol production is synonymous with Pathein.
Pathein remains a major busy port where ferries transporting passengers or cargo plying between Yangon and the northern and eastern Myanmar. Rice from the Delta region is still exported through the port of Pathein.
Some 300,000 people live in Pathein, which was established in 1852 as a garrison town for the British. Although most are ethnic Bamars and, mainly Buddhists, there is a significant number of Kayin who are either Catholics or members of the Karen Baptist Church. These are mainly lowland agriculture Karen who was encouraged by the British to move from Karen State in eastern Myanmar to help resolve the delta region, which was in need of rice farmers.
Therefore, there are a number of churches, in addition to the usual pagodas. The red and white brick of the cathedral of San Peter's, for example, was built in 1872. There is an older cathedral known as the Convent of San Jose, now transformed to a public high school.
Shwemokhpaw Pagoda
The most important pagoda is the Shwemokhpaw, all-aglitter with inlaid mirrors. It draws pilgrims from throughout the Delta region during a full moon festival in May.
Pathein is also known for its handicrafts umbrella. Taw Yakuang road, a half-hour ride by trishaw from the center of the city, row by row of burgundy-colored umbrellas set to dry in front of houses. Actually all households in the village seems to be involved in the production of these umbrellas used only by monks. In larger homes, "summer" umbrella painted in a variety of bright colors and decorated with flowers or people are also scenes of ordinary use.
Chaung Tha beach is located 40 km west of Pathein. It is a pleasure to visit the unspoiled Chaung Tha beach just half a day's drive from Yangon via Pathein. There is no flight available between Yangon and Chaung_Tha. There are many bungalow type hotels along the beach with modern facilities.
Its white sand and the blue water attract the tourists to take beach leisure. It is a very convenient drive from Yangon via Pathein taking about 5 hours. The hotels are usually filled with local domestic tourists from September to April. There is a variety of choice of dinner available at reasonable prices and the sea food is very fresh. One can also visit the nearby fishing villages, rivers and swamps a sand island.
