This large image of the Buddha is known as the Thandawgya, “Within Hearing of the Royal Voice,” because it was said to be situated not too far from the royal palace. The seated image, 19 feet 6 inches high, was erected by King Narathihapate (1256-1287).
It was usual, in the brick and stucco images of this type, to fix the image in position by having a wooden shaft pass through the centre of the torso and to secure it to the back wall by means of a plank whose end was perforated to hold the shaft.
