It was one among 84,000 pagodasĀ built by King Thiri Dhamma Thawka. It lies on Buddha Hill, Shwechaung in Pakokku, Magway Division.
The name was given to coincide with the elipse o the moon--- mu-htaw , with the shwe added later with donations o gold. Originally it was three cubits and half, but with renovations done to it by nine kings it is now 8 feet and 6 inches. King Inn-wa the First built the gandakuti taik and the pagoda above it. Of satellite pagodas, one contained a stone inscription encasing the original at the Saturday corner. It was said to be built by Shwemuhtaw Sayadaw who died about 100 years ago. Reference 1.
