It was built by Glass Palace Master (a) King Sunday (a) King Sinbyushin in 1094.
According o fables, Buddha and Young Brother Ananda went on tour by air in that area, where they met 500 orges (some records say 99) and preached a sermon where-upon they became enlightened. The place was earlier called Sotapan, hence its name Sotapan Pagoda. In the cave pagoda, there was a huge image of Buddha encircled by the ogres and was so named Legyun Manaung Pagoda.
