It was built by King Thalun, thiri Thudhamma Yaza Pawara Dipati, on the 10th Waxing Day of Tawthalin 998 ME during the second part of Innwa Nyaungyan Period, in Sagaing. It was conscrated by King Pintale, Thiri Nanda Yaza Pawra Adipati, son of King Thalun, on the 8th Waxing of Kason, 1001.

The pagoda is 188 feet high, with the umbrella 26 feet high. The pagoda has a girth o 880 feet five inches. The umbrella has a girth of 5 feet 8 inches. The weight o the umbrella is 3440 viss. It was styled after the shape of a heap of paddy Htupayon Maha Zedi built by Dewanampiya the king of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.

It enshrined the lower left tooth relic of Buddha, 11 hair relics, an alms bowl, statues, pagodas and other relics. The whole pagoda was completed in 1012. It was named Yaza Mani Sula to indicate its enshrinement of the tooth relic, hair relics and others. Today it is also known as Kaung Hmu Daw.
