gubyaukgyi temple

It is near Wetgyi-Inn Village between Bagan and Nyaung-U. It was built in early 13th century, on the model of Maha Bodhi Zedi. It has an entrance in the east  and it is a double-terrace cave pagoda. On outer walls are ink writings of 550 Jatakas and drawings captioned in Pali and Myanmar in squarish characters. The cement plaques bearing the drawings were most dense and shiny. Som link this phaya with Kyansittha, son Yaza Kumar and Mya Zedi inscriptions because of their proximity.

This Gubyaukgyi, or “ Great Painted Cave Temple”, situtated southeast of Wetkyi-in village, is to be differentiated from another Gubyaukgyi which is near Myinkaba village.

The pyramidal spire which surmounts the main square block probably owed inspiration to the Mahabodhi temple at Bodha Gaya.

The Gubyaukgyi is noted for the paintings of Jataka scenes which adorn its interior walls. Each scene is painted on a small, square panel, which is neatly delineated. The legends in Myanmar give the title of each Jataka and mention the main character depicted in the scene.

Unfortunately, a great many of the panels were removed by a Dr. Thomann who visited Myanmar in 1899.
